Egg freezing involves retrieving and freezing unfertilized eggs for future use. It is an established fertility preservation option that can be considered for medical reasons, prior to certain treatments, or in selected IVF-related situations where clinically appropriate. Egg freezing helps preserve the possibility of future pregnancy by storing eggs at a point in time, to be used later as part of an IVF cycle.
Who may benefit from egg freezing?
Egg freezing may be considered for:
- Patients undergoing medical treatments that may affect fertility, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or other gonadotoxic treatments
- Women who require fertility preservation due to medical conditions that may impact ovarian function
- Selected IVF-related situations where egg freezing is recommended as part of the treatment plan, where clinically and legally applicable
What does the process involve?
- A clinical assessment and treatment planning visit
- Ovarian stimulation with medications, when appropriate
- Ultrasound monitoring to assess follicle development
- Egg retrieval, followed by freezing of mature eggs in the embryology laboratory
Your physician will explain the expected timeline, monitoring plan, and next steps based on your medical profile.
Using frozen eggs in the future
When you are ready to use frozen eggs, they are thawed and fertilized in the laboratory (typically using ICSI), and embryos can be transferred according to the recommended plan.
Important note: The most suitable fertility preservation option depends on medical condition, treatment plan, and personal circumstances, in line with applicable clinical and regulatory requirements in KSA. This step-by-step overview is provided for general orientation and is pending final clinical review.
