Gender selection is a medical option available as part of IVF treatment, where embryos are tested prior to transfer to determine their chromosomal sex. This is achieved through preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).
How does gender selection work?
Gender selection is performed during an IVF cycle. After embryos are created in the laboratory, a small number of cells are biopsied and analyzed using PGT. This testing identifies the chromosomal makeup of each embryo, including sex chromosomes (XX or XY) and trisomy's 13,18 and 21. Based on the results, embryos of the desired gender—if available and suitable—may be selected for transfer.
