Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized imaging test used to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes. It helps identify whether the fallopian tubes are open and assesses the shape of the uterine cavity and any intrauterine masses.
Who may benefit from HSG?
HSG may be recommended for:
- Women experiencing difficulty conceiving
- Suspected blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Evaluation of uterine abnormalities
- Part of a routine fertility workup
How does HSG work?
HSG is performed by introducing a contrast dye into the uterus through the cervix, followed by X-ray imaging. The dye outlines the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, allowing the specialist to assess their structure and patency.
Important note: The procedure is usually performed after menstruation and before ovulation. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or cramping during the test.
