Book an AppointmentAdvanced sperm retrieval techniques
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) and Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) are minimally invasive sperm retrieval procedures used when sperm is absent from the ejaculate. To support optimal outcomes, we work in close collaboration with the Urology and Andrology teams at Almoosa Specialist Hospital as part of a coordinated approach to assisted reproductive treatment.
Who may benefit from PESA or TESA?
These procedures may be recommended in:
- Azoospermia (absence of sperm in semen)
- Obstructive conditions preventing sperm release
- Previous unsuccessful sperm retrieval
- Cases where sperm quality or availability is limited
How do PESA and TESA work?
- PESA involves retrieving sperm from the epididymis using a fine needle
- TESA involves retrieving sperm directly from the testicular tissue
Both procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia and are relatively quick and considered as minimal invasive procedures.
Use in ICSI
The retrieved sperm are used in Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where the best single sperm is injected directly into an egg to achieve fertilization. This approach allows fertilization even when sperm count or motility is very low.
Important note: The choice between PESA and TESA depends on the underlying condition and clinical evaluation. Your specialist will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your case.
