Office hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus, which may be needed prior to undergoing an IVF cycle. It allows direct visualization of the uterine cavity using a thin, lighted instrument (hysteroscope), without the need for general anesthesia in most cases.
Who may benefit from office hysteroscopy?
Office hysteroscopy may be recommended for:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Suspected uterine abnormalities (such as polyps, fibroids, or adhesions)
- Recurrent miscarriage
- Repeated IVF failure
- Evaluation prior to fertility treatment
- Cervical stenosis
- Diagnosis of congenital uterine abnormalities
How does office hysteroscopy work?
The procedure is performed by gently inserting a hysteroscope through the cervix into the uterus. Saline is used to expand the uterine cavity, allowing the specialist to clearly assess its structure. In some cases, minor abnormalities can be treated during the same procedure.
Important note: Office hysteroscopy is usually a short procedure and may cause mild discomfort or cramping. It is typically performed without anesthesia, and patients can return to normal activities shortly after.
