Book an AppointmentPreserving embryos for future use
Embryo freezing, or cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation option used to store embryos created during an IVF or ICSI cycle for future use. High-quality embryos that are not transferred in the same cycle may be frozen and stored, allowing couples to preserve the possibility of pregnancy at a later time. Embryo freezing is also used in cases where a frozen embryo transfer (FET) is medically recommended in a subsequent cycle.
Who may benefit from embryo freezing?
Embryo freezing may be considered for:
- Couples undergoing IVF or ICSI who wish to preserve surplus embryos for future use
- Patients advised to delay embryo transfer for medical reasons, where a frozen transfer is recommended in a later cycle
- Couples planning future family building and seeking flexibility in timing, in line with applicable clinical and regulatory requirements in KSA
How embryos are frozen and stored
Embryos are assessed in the embryology laboratory and suitable embryos are cryopreserved using specialized freezing methods. Frozen embryos are stored under controlled conditions for later use, according to clinical guidelines and applicable regulations.
What does a frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle involve?
- A natural cycle, or
- A hormonally prepared cycle
The uterine lining is monitored (typically by ultrasound) to determine the optimal timing for transfer. Once the lining is ready, the thawed embryo is transferred into the uterus.
Important note: The most suitable approach depends on the couple's medical condition, treatment plan, and personal circumstances, in line with applicable clinical and regulatory requirements in KSA. This step-by-step overview is provided for general orientation and is pending final clinical review.

What to Expect
- 01
IVF or ICSI Cycle
Embryo freezing begins with a standard IVF or ICSI cycle — ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilization in our embryology lab.
- 02
Embryo Development & Assessment
Fertilized eggs are cultured for several days. Our embryologists monitor development closely and assess which embryos are suitable for transfer or freezing.
- 03
Vitrification
Embryos selected for storage are frozen using vitrification — an ultra-rapid flash-freezing technique that minimizes ice crystal formation and maximizes the chance of successful thawing later.
- 04
Secure Long-Term Storage
Frozen embryos are stored in individually labelled, temperature-controlled containers in our secure lab. Storage records are maintained with strict chain-of-custody protocols.
- 05
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
When you are ready for your next cycle, the embryo is carefully thawed and transferred. Your care team prepares your body for transfer and guides you through the process from start to finish.
